A little history from the region:
Alcântara has its name associated to the muslim presence in the territory, whose word derives from the arabic "al-qantara” that means bridge, which marked presence as crossing of the existing river at the time.
Later, Alcântara was a scene of historical events, such as the stay of General Junot during the french invasions of 1807, the construction of a public barn, as well as the growth of the industry sector with a focus on dyeing and printing.
Such industry growth forced the conquest of the land by the Tejo for new factories construction, causing an increase of the population in the area, especially in the neighborhoods of Santo Amaro and Calvário.
In urbanistics terms, it was in the twentieth century that major transformation tooks place with the construction of the Bairro do Alvito, Maritime Station of Alcântara, the opening of the Avenida de Ceuta and the construction of the bridge over the Tejo.
Also in the twentieth century Alcântara was one of the main republican districts plotting against the monarchy planning strategies for the establishment of the republic. The building's street name is a respectful tribute to the republican personality Gilberto Rola.
